Now there is a man who does not want his throat slit
Julian Baggini, the editor of The Philosopher’s Magazine, takes to the Guardian to insist that there should be a limited license to offend. And by curious coincidence, he comes up with just the formulation that begs, screams, “Please don’t slit my throat.”
Christians, for example, are not oppressed, despite what some wannabe martyrs would have us believe. British Muslims, in contrast, are a somewhat beleaguered minority. We should think twice before mocking them because, while comedy speaking truth to power is funny, the powerful laughing at the weak is not. The difference is only subtle to those too dunderheaded to spot the obvious.
Really? So, the assassination attempt on Salman Rushdie was carried out by a bunch of Lutherans. And the 7/7 bombings in London in 2005 were carried out by crazed Jehovah’s Witnesses. I must have been too dunderheaded to notice that. There are beleagured Muslims, of course, starting with the Muslim girls and women murdered by their fathers and husbands in so-called honor killings, although Baggini does not mention them. Not surprising, really, when you see that this a pathetic attempt by someone who does not want his throat slit to instead sound high and mighty. Not working.
