At the Volokh Conspiracy, David Bernstein offers a mea culpa:
So, on the tenth anniversary of the Oslo agreement, I acknowledge that with regard to Arafat, at least, I was wrong. He was, and is, much more vicious and stupid (mostly vicious) than I imagined. Yet I really had no reason to believe otherwise to begin with, given his previous record of ordering the murder of innocents. Mea culpa.
He also quotes Ruth Wisse's ungenerous but accurate shredding of the large number of Israelis who bought into Oslo. Ungenerous, because people living through 45 years of enemy attacks can get very, very tired. Accurate, because Oslo was pretty much guaranteed to fail. Jeff Jacoby puts it this way.
Israelis crave peace, and they thought they craved it at any price. But peace at any price leads to war. Ten years after the handshake at the White House, let that be Oslo's epitaph.
