I am flattered, very much so, by making CalPundit's list of ten most interesting conservative sites. Being on the same list with Dan Drezner and the Volokh Conspiracy does not happen to me every day. Although I am shocked to be described as having "an acerbic, curmudgeonly style". Sweet little me?
But to the point of this post, other than indulging in vanity. Kevin precedes his list by noting
I know I'll get lots of shit in comments asking how I can possibly recommend a complete asshole like [fill in the blank].
In my case, I can report that he has the backing of the establishment press. A while back, before I started blogging, I was reading the International Herald Tribune, and they made a passing comment on HUAC, which they said was chaired by Sen. Joe McCarthy. [I have spotted this error twice in the IHT, and once in Time.] I was more than a bit annoyed. I'm not really a fanatic about errors, but cripes, how much effort does it take to notice that a senator is not supposed to chairing a committee of the House? The writer misses it, and the editors too? Talking about mixing up your demons. So I sent off an email noting the error, and it might just possibly have been perhaps just a tiny bit more acerbic than necessary. I got back an email that I was not supposed to get. My email was forwarded from one editor to another with the comment (I'm working from memory here):
Got this from some right wing asshole. Unfortunately, he's right.
I was in heaven, elated, jumping for joy. I hadn't had that much fun in years. I wrote back, thanking for them the email, and told them that my wife thought it was the nicest thing anyone had said about me in years. It was nice to know they are feisty bunch there. Of course, then the IHT went all corporate on me and apologized, which was a bit of a bummer, so I wrote back and assured them I wasn't the least bit offended, and had enjoyed the email immensely. This happened while the IHT was joint Times-Post operation, so Kevin can know that his readers have the backing of the New York Times and the Washington Post, jointly. Pretty impressive, huh?Posted by sjostrom on August 15, 2003 11:00 AM

LMAO! That is great! That is truly the best left-handed (and left-slanted) compliment I could ever hope to receive! I'm jealous! Way to go!
I'm gonna be grinning like an idiot all day after reading that!

Which validates Ann Coulters argument that McCarthyism is an Orwellian myth. As did her appearance on Bill O'Reilly's show recently, where the interview went something like:
O'Reilly: How can you defend Joe McCarthy. He ruined innocent peoples' lives.
Coulter: Name one.
O'Reilly (after a pause): Dalton Trumbo.
Coulter (laughing): McCarthy had nothing to do with Dalton Trumbo.
O'Reilly: HUAC.
Coulter: Bill, SENATOR McCarthy served in the SENATE. The H in HUAC stands for HOUSE.
O'Reilly: I don't want to debate McCarthy with you.

You did save a copy of that email, right? Printed it out and framed it even? I know I would have. :-)
