Wag the dog
Everyone knows about former Illinois governor George Ryan’s wag the dog trick of releasing sundry butchers from death row, in the hope that his corruption might be forgotten about. Ireland has its own. Enda Kenny, the vacuous head of Fine Gael, got himself in trouble with the Irish left for a telling a story that was widely perceived as racist. So, perhaps to get their minds focused elsewhere, Kenny has gotten hysterical about demanding that Bertie Ahern, the prime minister (taoiseach, for those who like that sort of thing), join up with the axis of weasels.
There is a comic sideshow to this story. The Irish army is currently protecting Shannon airport from the crazies on the Irish left. So the Greens and Sinn Fein, major representatives of the crazies on the Irish left, are demanding to know how much the protection is costing (?40,000 per week, as it happens). Now why don’t crime bosses think of that. Complain about their higher taxes because of all the police that are being hired.
